How Could It Happen?

Just before I went to bed last night, the breaking news from CNN was that one of the trapped miners in West Virginia was found--dead. Uh-oh, I thought. The area where the 13 men were trapped also was full of carbon monoxide I'd heard. The men were equipped with masks to provide oxygen but how long would that last? They'd already been down there over 24 hours.

When I woke up this morning, the news was even worse! Apparently the families were given the message that twelve men were found alive and the church bells began ringing and people were thanking God and celebrating. A news reporter said that some medical personnel--nurses?--talked about the conditions of each of the 12 men. Others said the rescuers had been talking to the men. Then about 3 hours later, the families found out that there'd been a "miscommunication" and that all the men--except one--were dead.

The families freaked. Who can blame them? How could officials get this kind of information so tragically and horribly wrong?

My heart goes out to the families of the lost miners and I'm praying for the recovery of the lone survivor, who is in critical condition at the hospital.
