Lost: The Brig

Whoa! The episode aired two nights ago and I'm still bedazzled! Some fans on the forums I read have been complaining about Lost and it seems no matter what the writers do, they're not satisfied. I fell in love with this show and have no complaints at all--it's just getting better and better!

After this episode, though, I worry about one of my favorite characters, Sawyer. The PTB (powers that be) at Lost have said that there will be five character deaths by the time the season ends. One of them was killed brutally last night--and Sawyer did it! That's the first strike against him...not only that he committed the murder but because it resolves a key conflict he's had all his life. The other reason I fear for Sawyer is that he's been having sex on the island and so far, most of the characters who were killed either just had sex or were about to.

Although some "fans" (are they really?) complain that it was too "obvious", the fact that Locke's morally degenerate father turned out to be the con man responsible for the deaths of Sawyer's parents have been in the works since Season 1. These writers are very good. They start out with two characters like Locke and Sawyer, totally different and unknown to each other, and gradually over the seasons we begin to see how their lives overlap.

It's not just with Locke and Sawyer. It's with other characters too. These writers really do know what they are doing and they are so good at it! You need really good actors too in order to tell a good story and this show has them. Terry O'Quinn plays John Locke and Josh Holloway plays James "Sawyer" Ford. They were at their absolute best last night. It will be a crying shame if they are not nominated for Emmies!

Although one of John Locke's issues are resolved, his story is not done. In fact, I think that the whole mystery of the island, the whole reason for this show and story really revolves around him. He is on a true hero's journey, in search of himself and battling with obstacles he has to resolve in order to meet his destiny--whatever that is. So far, he's overcome paralysis (which his miserable father caused) by being 'cured' by the island and he seems to have overcome wimpishness by becoming the man he wanted to be on an Australian walkabout--a wise, knowledgeable and caring man who will hunt boar with knives and build a cradle with his hands.

There are lots of other great characters on the show but none like Locke, not in my opinion anyway.
