Thursday Thirteen 23: How I Should Bandage TB's Legs

Thirteen Things toRemember to Bandage TB's Legs

TB has lymphedema in both legs and they need to be bandaged every day to try and force the fluid up and out. It takes some getting used to and I tried it the other day. It took me about an hour with the guidance of the physical therapist. See, you have to be careful not to cut off circulation or to bandage inconsistently (which could allow fluid to drain back into the lower legs). I'm sure I'll get faster at it as I get used to the procedure.

Watching and then doing helps me learn but so will this. If I write it down step by step it will help me remember.

The directions comes from pictures like this one:

1. Put a lot of lotion on his legs first because they're very dry

2. Put the stockinette on. This is a sheer white stocking.

3. Slide on lower leg foam. The physical therapist cut the foam to fit TB's legs.

4. Apply toe wrap and anchor it around the base of the toes. This is a soft white bandage

5. Apply wrap from the tip of the toe to the base of the toe, leaving ou the little toe. At the base of each toe, I would wind the bandage around his foot.

6. Apply the soft padding layer to the top of the foot and ankle. These were also cut to fit by the therapist from a piece of foam

7. Adhere foam on ankle bones and top of foot with soft padding bandage (cotton)

8. Apply a layer of soft bandages from ankle to knee--ace bandage

9. Adhere the foam from shine to calf with ace bandages, moving in opposite directions with each layer--there are 3 or 4 layers, can't remember which

10. Adhere bandage around the base of the toes. Loop the abandage around the back of the heel. Cover the forefoot.

11. Cover the heel and then the ankle

12. Anchor bandage from above the ankle. Cover the sole of the foot.

13. Spiral remaining bandage toward the knee. Anchor it above the ankle.

So TB's leg should look like this:

Wow... that's a lot of steps. I was just noting in the JMA that more doctors are finally taking lymphedema a touch more seriously than they used to which is good... as you know, without treatment, it's a horrible issue.

That looks very complicated!

Gee, what a job! Still, if you've gotta do it everyday, you should get the hang of it pretty soon. Thanks for passing by my blog. :)

Hi, Too bad that TB has to wear those things around his/her leg everyday. But, it's good that there is someone like you around to help.
Hope TB gets well soon.
