Feline Friday: Cubby Needs Advice

This has been the week that Murphy came to lodge in our house and refused to move. Not just Murphy, but all of his corollaries and cousins. In other words, if something could go wrong, it did. "If there is a possibility of several things going wrong, the one that will cause the most damage will be the one to go wrong. Corollary: If there is a worse time for something to go wrong, it will happen then."

How does this apply to Cubby?

Well, he's got this allergy-to-sand-fleas problem and the dog keeps carrying them in so I guess the population of fleas has moved to our carpets. We've tried everything to get rid of the fleas but, as the vet pointed out, it's just going to keep coming back because the dog's gotta go out. And outside, sand fleas will keep jumping on him.

Poor Cubby. He reacts like none of the gang does. Frontline doesn't seem to help him and this is even giving him the med two weeks earlier (the vet said we could) than a month. He's getting scabs all over again from scratching. Last time we took him, he needed a shot of cortisone and then had to take pills for like 10 days. It cost us about $200. Normally we'd budget $50 for a vet visit. We don't have pet insurance and none of the vets will let us go on a payment plan. How are people on fixed incomes or people who are poor supposed to provide quality care for their pets for crying out loud?

We were going to rob Peter to pay Paul and take Cubby to the vet ... and then TB swallowed his crown accidentally. The tooth that remains underneath is very sensitive. We went to the dental clinic, hoping to get a temporary but no, they told us to go home and see if the crown passes by itself (ew). If not, we have to cough up $285 up front for the clinic to put in a new crown. It's a reasonable price but already we put off the needed car brake repair to rob Peter to pay the vet ... except now instead of the vet, we'll need it for the clinic.

So ... while we wait a week to scrape more money to rob another Peter to pay the vet, I needed to find out from all youse cat lovers: can I give Cubby benedryl? Is there something I can do to relieve his itching for another week until we can get him to the vet? Any and all advice welcome!!!!

May God help you in your situations. Vets are so expensive and so is the dentist.
Poor Cubby, I hope they find something that works for him.

I used to put cut up flea collars in the vacumme bag, so whatever eggs were sucked up, they didn't just hatch in the bag. You have to run the vac FREQUENTLY - like daily. I seem to remeber something about brewers yeast in the diet as well as garlic. Hope this helps and good luck!
